Formed in 2023 at Clovis North High School in Fresno, California, the Zephyr Quartet is a saxophone ensemble dedicated to bringing the beauty of chamber music to the Fresno-Clovis community.

The quartet performs a diverse repertoire, ranging from classical saxophone standards to modern works inspired by jazz and other forms of popular music. With a passion for musical excellence, the members of the Zephyr Quartet have consistently earned top placements in honor bands at both the local and state level.

In 2025 the Zephyr Quartet advanced to the semifinals of the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and were the winners of the Mana Saxophone Institute High School Quartet Competition. As such, they were featured performers at the 2025 Mana Saxophone Institute held at San Jose State University. They have also participated in masterclasses with Dr. Kenneth Tse (University of Iowa) and Dr. Benjamin Boone (Fresno State University).

The group strives to inspire the next generation of musicians by encouraging middle school and fellow high school students to explore the world of saxophone and chamber music. Through engaging performances and outreach, Zephyr Quartet aims to enrich the local music scene and cultivate a deeper appreciation for chamber music in the community.

Mike Hazelrigg

Guest Conductor

I am a band dad and my four children have been in the CNEC band program continuously since 2014. It has been one of the great joys of my life to have been involved with the band for 12 years. The band staff at Clovis North truly cares about each student. It is a calling, more than a job, for each of the band directors to set aside thousands of hours each year to train the next generation in the art of music.

For my family, the time spent in the band program has helped set a course for each of my children. My oldest son, directly after high school, joined the Marine Corps and served four years with the Marine Forces Reserve Band in New Orleans. My daughter played in college band and received a partial flute scholarship. My middle son is now a worship leader at a local church.

My youngest son, who is on stage tonight, is getting ready to play trombone at Fresno State and will be majoring in Music Education. The foundational skills and work ethic my kids learned here in the Bronco Band has been invaluable and will follow them for the rest of their lives.

I’m so excited to be on stage for this last concert of my “career” as a Clovis North band parent.

Nathan Hazelrigg

Trombone Soloist

My time in the CNEC Music Program has been the biggest influence on who I am today, both as a musician and a person. Watching my directors lead rehearsals and set high bars for us showed me exactly what it takes to build a successful ensemble.

Beyond the music, I’ve made lifelong friendships and have already started connecting with people I know will be my future colleagues in the music world. These relationships and the program itself taught me how to communicate, take on real responsibility, and work with a group toward a common goal.

I’m heading to Fresno State this fall to major in Music Education because I want to give back and eventually be a band director who helps students grow the same way my directors and peers helped me.
