From The Director's Desk

Congratulations on another exciting weekend at the Golden State Tournament of Bands.  A large thank you to the parent volunteers who helped make that event a success, not just for our students but for the Clovis Community and other participating bands.

  • We have another exciting 4-day swing. I hope you will join us tonight at the 19th Annual CUSD Band Night at VMS.  This is open to the public and begins at 6 pm, with every middle school and high school band student performing the Star Spangled Banner.  There will be over 1000 student musicians and performers on the field!!!

  • Friday morning a small pep band will go to the district office to play for All Clovis Week.  Please see Cuttime for deatails

  • We have our final regular season football game against Clovis East at Buchanan Stadium on Friday.  Kickoff will be at 7:00 pm.  It is also Senior Night.  Please see Cuttime for details.

  • Saturday, the band will be traveling to Dublin HS for our third WBA competition of the season.  Please go to westernbands.org to find our general information about the contest.

THANK YOU ALL THE FAMILIES WHO PARTICIPATED IN OUR THIRD ANNUAL TRUNK OR TREAT LAST NIGHT!!!!

There were some great decorations and costumes.  Thanks for giving our students some additional fun after some hard work.

How does the weather affect a marching band competition?

If you have been keeping track of the forecast this week, you will see a chance of rain on Saturday.  We will play things on a minute-to-minute basis.  Please be prepared for anything.

  • The posted itinerary will be followed.

  • Any alterations will be sent out through remind for quick changes.

  • Any large changes will be made on cuttime itinerary and a remind text will be sent to instruct you to check the updated itinerary on cuttime

  • Please DO NOT assume any rehearsal or performance is canceled until you receive a remind text or notification from Mr. Lesser.

In the event of rain, you should have some other supplies ready to go.

  • Some type of raingear

  • A towel to dry your instrument

  • Woodwinds should have a pack of cigarette wrappers (I know this doesn’t sound appropriate but it is the best way to dry wet pads because of the type of paper and absorption that occurs)

LAST CHANCE TO PASS OFF PART 1 & 3 EXCEPRTS OF SCULPT

ree

We are getting close to the cuttoff for music pass off retakes.  Please remember, these retakes have been available to students for the last 10 weeks.  Students are able to retest, before school, during lunch, after class, and after school every day of the week.

The last day for retakes will be Monday Nov. 17.  There has been an uptick of pass off completions.  The grade book will be updated by next week.  The students who have come in multiple times have received instant feedback and help on what they need to work on and how they should work on it in their practice time.  If you don’t come in to retest… you will have no way to pass these assignments.  We are hoping with the amount of times we have performed these musical selections since the start of the school year students would have basic proficiency on these selections.

STANDARD OF THE WEEK

TEAMWORK

ree

As we are almost halfway through the competitive part of the season, we switch from learning mode to polish and excellence mode.  Here is where we want to tighten all the screws and get every individual to perform as close to 100% as possible.  This is a tedious process that takes determination, grit, and consistency from each member of the band.  It can get easy to start pointing fingers at one another when things are not going the way we might want.

What is important during this time is to remember that we all need to respect the value of Teamwork.  What are the older members of the band doing to care for the younger members?  How are we teaching the expectations at this time in the season to people who are getting through it for their first time?  What are the younger members doing to be prepared at each rehearsal, showing their enthusiasm and coachability, while bringing something to the table each day, caring for the work our older members have laid out in the past for continued success?

Let’s not point the finger.  Let’s see how we are contributing to the group as individuals and help bring everyone together to find the highest level of achievement possible.

WBA CHAMPIONSHIPS

ree

We have a fantastic fundraising opportunity that doesn’t come around all the time.  We are partnering with WBA, Clovis HS, Clovis East HS and Clovis West HS to host the WBA 4/5A class and Grand Championships.

Possible volunteer slots are posted on Cuttime We don’t know the exact times and locations needed as of today.  If we could start getting volunteers loaded, we can update locations and amounts once those details arise.  We thank you ahead of time for participating in helping this event be a great one for students throughout California at this Championship event!
