CN Band Newsletter 02.27.2026

From the Director’s Desk

Happy Friday!  It’s a show day.  Please join us tonight for our third SJVCGPR Show at Clovis North.  We are now entering the busiest part of the school year.  Please help us keep our students healthy and on top of all their responsibilities, pertaining to attendance, school work, and their musical excellence.

San Joaquin Valley Concert Band Invitational

It's only about 1 month away.  We need a few parent volunteers with some AV experience or some photography experience to help with a project on the day of the event.  If you are available to help on Friday, March 20, please let me know.

The purpose of the San Joaquin Valley Concert Band Invitational is to provide a first class performance and educational experience for groups across the Western United States.

SJVCBI provides only the finest educators, conductors, composers, and performers as adjudicators to ensure every participant receives an enriching, valuable, and inspiring festival experience.

TRUCK DRIVER?!?!?!? CLASS A LICENSE!?!?!?!

Do you or someone you know have a Class A drivers liscence and be interested in joining our CN Band truck driver team?

Dennis has been driving our CN Band truck since 2011.  That is a very long time.  While not fully ready to retire, we need to find some substitute drivers or a team who would begin working to transition to be our CN Band truck Driver.

If you currently have a Class A license or know someone who does, who would be interested, please contact Mr. Gabrielson or Mr. Lesser.

If you do not have your Class A license, but it is something you have always wanted to do, please reach out to Mr. Gabrielson or Mr. Lesser as well for a conversation about steps to earn it.

Remember… without someone to drive our equipment, we can’t go anywhere.  This position is extremely important.  Thank you for your help.

Pledge Forms are now Past Due

If you have not completed one, please do so ASAP.  We will be entering these in the gradebook for completion shortly.  Thank you for your attention to this.

No items are too big or too small! The little details help our baskets look extra special for our buyers. Keep in mind that we are not only looking for basket items, but also donations of supplies to make beautiful baskets such as baskets, ribbon, cellophane, etc.

Jazz Bands

Stellar job at the San Joaquin Jazz Festival this last weekend!

Clinician Willie Murillo, (of the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band) was ecstatic about both our bands! He said our Granite Ridge lead trumpet player was one of the best he’s heard in 20 years. While describing Clovis North Jazz as a “top level” band, he and Paul Lucckesi (of Fresno City College) offered us invaluable advice to improve our next performances.

CN is finished with Jazz Festivals.

Granite Ridge (only) has a Jazz Festival on March 26.

Our CNEC Spring Jazz Concert is April 28th.

Thanks!

Mr. Dewhirst

Winter Guard Updates

Our Winter Guard programs are in full swing, and it has already been an exciting and successful season for all three competitive teams!

The Varsity Guard recently returned from the first California regional hosted by Winter Guard International in San Diego. The team delivered two strong performances over the weekend. After earning a 77.1 in prelims and tying for 3rd place, they came back even stronger in finals, improving their score to a 78.1 and officially securing 3rd place overall. We are incredibly proud of their focus, growth, and competitive drive as they continue building momentum this season.

All three of our competitive programs — Granite Ridge, Junior Varsity, and Varsity — will take the floor again this Friday at the SJVCGPR Show hosted here at Clovis North in the Small Gym. We are excited to showcase our work at home and would love the support of our school community.

Performance times are as follows:

  • Granite Ridge – “The Edifice of Us” at 6:28 PM

  • Clovis North Junior Varsity – “Blueprint” at 8:10 PM

  • Clovis North Varsity – “Homage to the Square” at 9:05 PM

Each show offers a unique theme and design, and detailed show descriptions can be found on our Instagram social media post.

Our Little Broncos, performing their show “Applause” began their season a bit later and will not be competing this week. They are preparing for their debut performance at our Family Night on March 16th, and we are excited to see them take the floor for the first time this season.

It is shaping up to be a fantastic year for our Winter Guard family. Thank you for your continued support of these talented performers as they represent our program with excellence both at home and on the regional stage.

Have a great week!

David Lesser, Director of Bands
