Updated: Sep 16, 2025

From the Director’s Desk

Picture day was a success!  Please be on the lookout for a link from Kenny Gilman Photography so you are able to purchase your pictures.

Our goal this week is to complete part 1 of the field show by the end of rehearsal this Saturday.  There is a lot to think about now that we are moving on the field, playing from memory, and are now moving props around as well.

We have one more Friday night off before we start getting ready for football games each week, now for a while.  I am really happy with the positive attitude of our students and staff.  I feel with some additional time, we will be able to put together a great production that everyone will be proud of.  This means we need everyone to continue to work hard outside of rehearsal to get extremely proficient on their instrument and music responsibilities.

STANDARD OF THE WEEK

Always Be Prepared

We are well into learning the field show. We are learning all the physical, mental, and musical demands it takes to be a successful performer.

To be the best performer possible, each member needs to do more than just “show up”.  Here is a short list of many of the things you need to do to be able to say you are doing your job as a member of the CN Bronco Band.

Before rehearsal:

  • Memorize Music

  • Memorize Drill sets this includes:

    • page number

    • measure numbers

    • Counts

    • coordinate on the field (side to side, front to back)

  • Have music at rehearsal

  • Have coordinate sheet at rehearsal

  • Have instrument in good working condition

  • Have dot book filled out

  • Bring water to every rehearsal

  • Wear appropriate clothes, light colors, athletic shoes, sunscreen

During rehearsal

  • Be early

  • Follow rehearsal procedures

    • At end of set “FREEZE”

    • Adjust form properly

    • Run back to sets

    • When not playing count out loud as a group

    • Remember when to apply +1 & -1 during rehearsal reps

    • Maintain focus, strong posture

    • Give your best effort every repetition

End of rehearsal

  • Celebrate small victories

  • Take stock in what you need to do in practice before the next rehearsal

  • Make time to pass off all playing tests in a timely manner

  • Ask section leaders, drum majors, or band staff for help if you don’t understand something

  • Be proud to be a BRONCO!!!

Prop Crew

The props for our field show have arrived, and they are pretty awesome!!!  They are also larger than anything we have tried to use before, and there is… some assembly required.  Some of the assembly will not work too well for students to put together while they are in uniform. So, we are looking to form a group of parents who would like to volunteer to be our prop crew for the fall football games and competitions.  We are looking for 8 parents who would be able to join us to unload, assemble, disassemble, and reload props at our performing events.  Please contact Mr. Lesser, Mr. Gabrielson, or Mr. Rogers if you are interested.  We will set up a time to learn how to load and assemble props.  This will be a big help to our students.  Thank you for your consideration.

Football Parking Fundraiser

We have football parking duty on Friday, September 19.  This is a quick fundraiser for us with minimal responsibility.  We will need three volunteers from 4-6 pm and three volunteers from 6-8 pm to collect money for football parking.  The band receives 100% of the funds generated from this.  Please sign up to volunteer on Cuttime.

Music Tests and pass-offs

We have just completed our third music pass-off.  We will begin the fourth section on Friday.  The second and third pass off will be the most challenging.  It will most definitely require students to give maximum effort and individual practice to succeed.  Please remember to schedule retakes with Mr. Lesser or Mr. Vargas.  Don’t wait till the last week or minute.  Sometimes it will take 5+ attempts to succeed.  Our goal is for 100% proficiency or like it says on the band room wall, we want every student to play, “Every Note of Every Measure”.

If you need to be able to access drill or music for practice, please go to Google Classroom.  The Google Classroom code is: 25vewrz

All State Auditions and Recordings

We hope many of our students are working to audition for the All-State Bands this year.  With the All-State Weekend earlier than ever, audition recordings are due in 5 weeks.  Please prepare to make your recordings and submit them on October 7.  We will meet next week to set up your profiles on the CASMEC website.

Concert Attire

Our fall concert is scheduled for Wed. Oct. 15.  We hope to see all of our families in attendance.  Stay tuned for more info about the fall concert.

Students will need the proper attire for this concert.

It is the following:

  • Boys: Black suit or tuxedo, white long-sleeve dress shirt, black bow tie, black dress socks, black dress shoes (marching band shoes are acceptable for this).

  • Girls: Black dress pants or slacks, black blouse or sweater, black stockings/socks, black dress shoes (flats)

US Marine Corps Music Placement

This Thursday, September 10th, Staff Sergeant Jon Kearney, The US Marine Corps Music Placement director will visit our band room after school from 3:30-4:15PM.

This is a time for students and parents to hear firsthand accounts of the opportunities and experiences available to highly qualified student musicians after graduation.

This will be a good time to get questions answered long before service eligibility and commitment.

Don’t forget to join us the last 30 minutes of our Tuesday night rehearsals.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Have a great rest of your week!

David Lesser, Director of Bands
