CN Band Newsletter 09.23.2025

From The Director's Desk

Happy Tuesday! This week, we begin the last third of the field show. Along with a football game/Homecoming, and rehearsal this Saturday. Things are moving along, and we are beginning to learn a bit quicker. The attitude of the students is still very positive and motivational. We need everyone to dig in and get super committed to learning their music so they can be positive contributors to their sections and to the entire ensemble.

Since it is homecoming this week, the band will perform at the end of the football game. We have also been told we will only have two buses to bring us home from the game. We will have anyone who is not involved with loading instruments or props after the game load two buses and return to school first. The hope is that once the extra bus returns to Clovis High, everything will be loaded and members can hop on the bus and get home safely.

Thank You!

Thank you to our parents who helped last week sell parking at the football game. I don’t have the final numbers on that yet, but there were lots of spectators due to Broncomania. So, we thank you volunteers for helping support the band.

Thank you to the few parents who signed up to help be a part of the prop crew at the football game last week. They quickly learned that we will need a team of at least 8 volunteers at each event to help ensure these things are done safely for our students.

Thank you to our chaperone and uniform parents for getting us going at only our second football game of the season. We can’t do it without you.

Thanks to everyone who supported our Mattress fundraiser last weekend. I will have the final information on that tomorrow morning. Cross your fingers… let’s hope it was a great turnout.

Standard of the Week

Be Honest - We are now 6 weeks into school and 8 weeks into the fall band semester. It is time to take stock in everyone's individual progress and realize what we need to do to reach our maximum potential. We also need to be honest with each other, holding ourselves and our friends accountable to best rehearsal etiquette and our additional responsibilities outside of band to allow us to maximize our time while we are together.

Tuesday Rehearsal Changes & Field Seeding

In the coming weeks, we will be displaced for a few Tuesday rehearsals due to reseeding the fields for the winter months.  This will turn a few Tuesday night rehearsals in to marching band rehearsals that will begin during 6th period and will conclude at 5:30.

Tuesday Sep. 30 and Tuesday Oct. 7 will be 6th period until 5:30pm.

This also means concert band will happen on Wed. Oct. 1 and Wed. Oct. 8. Please adjust your calendars to make that work.  Thank you.

Grading Period

The six-week grading period ends this week. We want all our students in band and color guard to receive an “A”. Please make sure students are keeping up to date with passing playing assignments to ensure they have the highest grade possible. Attendance is also the other largest contributing factor to why you might not be receiving an “A” in band or PE Band. There have not been as many retakes on music pass-offs as I would have expected by now. Please take the time to retake early and often. This will allow you to get pointers, tips, and tricks on what needs to get done so you can complete the pass-offs. Congratulations to the students who have completed these assignments. Thank you for your determination to learn these parts as quickly as possible.

Pledge Form & Signed Documents

Part of the grade is the signed documents on CutTime and the fall pledge form. Only about 50% of our students have completed the fall pledge for with their families. This must be completed and submitted so we are able to formulate our financial plan for the school year. Please complete this as soon as possible.

Prop Crew

The props are here! They are really amazing, really large, and there is some assembly required. Usually, we would have students unload, assemble, and reload props. However, this year for their safety and for some of the assembly needed, we would like to create a crew of parents who would be willing to help be a part of the team. We are looking for at least 8 parents to commit to unloading, assembling, disassembling, and loading props for football games and competitions. Please check CutTime to volunteer. Thank you for your help.

Concert Attire

Our Fall Concert & Food Truck Fundraiser is scheduled for Wed. Oct. 15. We hope to see all of our families in attendance. Stay tuned for more info about the fall concert.

Students will need the proper attire for this concert.

It is the following:

  • Boys: Black suit or tuxedo, white long-sleeve dress shirt, black bow tie, black dress socks, black dress shoes (marching band shoes are acceptable for this).

  • Girls: Black dress pants or slacks, black blouse or sweater, black stockings/socks, black dress shoes (flats)

The Pie Company Fundraiser

Message from Robin Wilson, CN Band Booster President

It was so wonderful to see so many of our parents out supporting the band at Friday night’s football game—your encouragement means so much to our students and program!

As we look ahead to the rest of the season, we are still in need of volunteers for both Prop Crew and Pit Crew.

Prop Crew: Help unload, assemble, and set up the props for our shows at football games and competitions and help disassemble and reload afterwards. Please sign up to help on the CutTime events for the upcoming football games and competitions.

Pit Crew: A very important role—assist with moving our front ensemble instruments and AV equipment from the truck, onto the field, and back to the truck at games and competitions. A full pit crew is essential to our success. For Pit Crew questions or to volunteer, please contact Mr. Gabrielson at davidgabrielson@clovisusd.k12.ca.us.

Thank you for supporting our band—together, we make the magic happen!

Don’t forget to join us the last 30 minutes of our Tuesday night rehearsals.

We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!

Have a great rest of your week!

David Lesser, Director of Bands
